Thailand to require foreign tourists to buy health insurance

Published: June 28, 2013 at 6:04 PM from UPI.com

BANGKOK, June 28 (UPI) -- Lawmakers in Thailand say they want all foreign tourists to be required to purchase travel and health insurance before arriving in their country.

Thailand's Public Health Ministry Wednesday proposed the measure during a meeting with representatives from the Airports of Thailand, Royal Thai Police and other government ministries, the Bangkok Post reported.

The health ministry has suggested the cost of health insurance coverage might be included in visa fees, Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong said at the meeting.

Those visiting Thailand without visas would be required to buy insurance at immigration checkpoints or the fees could be added to the cost of airline tickets.

After the meeting, Pradit said all of those involved agreed to set up a subcommittee to work on the proposal.

The health ministry set up the meeting after Thailand's government asked it to address concerns about the financial burden on the country's state hospitals, which are required to provide foreigners with free medical service, Pradit said.

Carabao are a Thai rock band which is very popular in Thailand and other Asian countries.

The group was formed in 1976 by university students Yuenyong Opakul (Aed) and Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon (Keo or Khiao) who met while studying at MapĂșa Institute of Technology in the Philippines.

The word carabao is Tagalog meaning “buffalo”, a symbol of fighting, hard work, and patience.

                                  carabao

They are known for their Phleng phuea chiwit or ‘songs for life’. This kind of music came to prominence through the protest songs of the 1970s political upheaval in Thailand, especially from the band Caravan.

Carabao have blended the acoustic/folk style of ‘peua chiwit’ with other forms of Thai music, western rock and country music, and various kinds of world music like Latin music and reggae, earning such labels as ‘ethnic rockers’ and ‘Kings of 3Cha’ or ‘Rolling Stones of Asia’. MTV Asia calls them “veteran”.

Carabao’s songs often tackle social and political issues, demanding social justice and taking on the causes of the ordinary Thai people, but they have also created love songs and more philosophical songs that carry messages for people everywhere.

Aed Carabao is loved by many but his sharp tongue and open criticism of corrupt politicians, big business and environmental destruction perhaps make it surprising that he has lasted so long.

At least one or two songs on most albums up to the mid-’90s were banned by the government and coverage of the band rarely appeared on government TV and radio stations.

Despite this, Carabao is the most popular Thai rock group of all time. Carabao has reached cult status long ago and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world.
They are compared with U2.

Readers please take note. This virus can be potentially very dangerous. There have been recent deaths in Saudi Arabia due to this virus. Last year we almost lost our dog to this virus as well, it can effect both people and animals.  Article below explains:

BANGKOK, June 24 - Thailand's Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong ordered health officials nationwide to be on alert of Coronavirus particularly in tourist destination provinces.

Mr Pradit said Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, Phuket, and Khon Kaen were especially ordered to be on high alert. He added that local hospitals are already prepared to receive suspected cases.

According to the minister, the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has not been detected in Thailand but the Public Health Ministry is ready to deal with the disease. All provinces are to monitor patients with serious respiratory symptoms, particularly those having pneumonia. Disease control is to be done for both MERS-CoV and Influenza A virus subtype H7N9.

Related laboratory systems are to be set up in the Medical Sciences Department's 14 centres nationwide for fast and accurate diagnosis of the disease.

Meanwhile, permanent-secretary for Public Health Narong Sahametapat said at risk groups vulnerable to Coronavirus are Thai-Muslim pilgrims who are going to Saudi Arabia for Hajj in Sep-Oct, Thai workers returning home from the Middle East, and Thais and foreigners travelling through Middle Eastern countries.

The Public Health Minister issued health advisories in Thai, English, and Arabic languages for those entering the country, providing preliminary information about the symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on June 17 reported that 64 patients had been confirmed infected with MERS-CoV with the death toll so far at 38 in nine countries, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.

The number of patients is anticipated to rise worldwide, while all countries are to closely monitor the situation. The source of the disease still remains unclear. (MCOT online news)

Whether you were at Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya last night, saw the fight on TV or caught the article in Pattaya One, you will have witnessed the ex heavyweight champion - get in 5 minutes - the worst beating of his career in any ring!. This was the article in Pattaya One. Had to share this one...so enjoy and watch video at the end!

In what many are describing as an embarrassing lesson for former World Boxing Champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe, who chose Pattaya for his debut Muay Thai bout, the former “Great” lost by Knock-Out in the second round of his fight against 30 year old Russian Levgen Golovin.
The “Muay Thai Super Fight” event was held at the Bali Hai Port in South Pattaya on Friday Night and featured a number of international Muay Thai fights in an event held to boost the profile of the famous Thai Sport to the rest of the World.
The event was well attended, with many of the spectators coming to see Riddick Bowe, who beat Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.
For Friday’s fight Bowe weighed in at a heavy 300 pounds and throughout the short fight he was slow and showed none of his punching power he was so well known for. It was repeated kicks to the legs which brought Bowe down to the canvass in the 2nd round which saw him unable to beat the count and continue the fight.
Many are saying 45 year old Bowe, who was paid a reported 150,000 US Dollars to fight in Pattaya, should not continue his career in Muay Thai and retire gracefully, but he is determined to continue in the sport.

Ex Heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe to fight in Pattaya 14 June

Superfight event will be held at a specially constructed boxing arena at Bali Hai from 6 p.m.

Muay Thai Authority reported yesterday that the Muaythai Superfight event, which was set to feature Riddick Bowe’s Muay Thai debut, had been canceled. It now seems that the event is not canceled, but instead rescheduled to June 14th due to an ankle injury suffered by Riddick Bowe in training. There is no word if any of the original match ups will remain, but it seems Bowe will still headline the card.

Riddick Bowe, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, gets back in the ring on Tuesday in Bangkok as he prepares for his debut in the Thai martial arts discipline of Muay Thai. Bowe, 44, has been inactive as a boxer since 2008 but having announced his decision in March to take on a new challenge, the American is now training in Bangkok ahead of a 14 June showdown against the Russian Levgen Golovin.

South Pattaya water shortage resolved???

Looks like plans are under way to help those in the South Pattaya area with their water shortage problems. This according to a recent article in the Pattaya Mail...

New pipelines could bring relief to water starved South Pattaya neighborhoods

The Provincial Waterworks Authority says a new pipeline set to come online soon should reduce water shortages faced by South Pattaya residents.

The pipe connecting the Mabprachan Reservoir with the Chaknok water-processing station is in the final inspection stages and will become yet another source of water for the thirsty city.

The PWA admits that residents and businesses on Thepprasit Road, and sois Chaiyapruek, Wat Bunkanchanaram, and Yansangwararam in South Pattaya have faced sporadic water shortages, due both to broken pipes and geography.

Residents there, however, say the problem has been more chronic than sporadic.

Piyada Pleedsai, who operates a restaurant opposite the Mae Loe Market, complained to the Pattaya Mail about repeated outages lasting for days. She said the increasing cost of buying water has been a burden on her and her neighbors.

“Almost every month the water stops,” the 34-year-old said. “Some months it is four days in a row or even an entire week. Some months there is no water for two weeks.”

The frequency of the outages has incited conspiracy stories around the neighborhood, with many believing water-truck operators are shutting down pipes so they can sell higher-priced water. She said prices for the water service has increased 50 percent in the past year and vendors charge her 500 baht extra just to pump water to a tank on her roof.

“This has been going on for a year and nothing has changed,” Piyada said. “The PWA needs to understand the difficulties we face and listen to our problems. Whenever I call them, no one makes any effort to solve the problem.”

PWA General Manager Araya Ngamwongwan disagreed, saying the utility is not only aware of the problems, but has been spending millions of baht to fix it.

The main problem, he said, lies with the East Water Co., which supplies much of Pattaya’s water. It operates 30-kilometer-long pipelines that are more than 30 years old and frequently break. While the utility tries to repair broken main lines within four hours, it takes time to re-pressurize the pipeline and get the water moving again.

The worst-affected South Pattaya neighborhoods not only lie at the end of the pipeline - meaning larger customers before them often take much of the available supply - but they also are located at higher elevation, making water distribution more difficult. The utility can’t increase pressure, it claims, because the old pipes cannot take it.

PWA officials said they’ve told Pattaya City Hall that new pipelines should be laid, but budget shortfalls have prevented any substantive work from ensuing. Chonburi Gov. Khomsan Ekachai has requested 2 billion baht for a pipe connecting Mabprachan with the Huay Khao Noi and Mabwaisom reservoirs, but no vote has been set on the request.

Meanwhile, the PWA is moving forward with new pipes from Mabprachan to neighborhoods in East Pattaya. In all, the utility is spending 800 million baht to bring hard water from five sources to Mabprachan, Pattaya’s main holding tank.

PWA officials urge anyone facing water shortages to contact the utility immediately. Araya said people can also call him directly at 081-876-3563
