Thailands politica problems move south into Pattaya causing problems for local business

Pattaya Red Shirts force cancellation of anti-government concert in South Pattaya

red-1.jpg

PATTAYA: -- The Pattaya Pro-Government Red Shirts were out in-force late on Monday Night in South Pattaya after they received word of a music concert at a South Pattaya Restaurant featuring a well-known anti-government singer.

The Singer is affectionately known as “Marijuana” and just 2 days before his appearance in Pattaya he was on-stage in Bangkok at an anti-government rally performing songs which accuse the Thai Prime Minister of being involved in corrupt activities.

Over 100 Red Shirts took part in a noisy protest outside of the Peace House Restaurant in Soi Khopai, owned by Khun Sitarmaert, who was forced to confront the Red Shirts and ultimately cancelled the concert, which was due to take place in less than 2 hours time.

The singer has performed at the restaurant many times but the owner confirmed that he will no longer perform at the restaurant as he fears for his own safety.

PATTAYA: -- A ladyboy water volleyball tournament has caused a splash in Thailand - with teams from across the country competing for the crown.

Eight sides - all made up of workers from the country's bars - descended on the coastal resort of Pattaya for the second annual event aimed at raising money for charity.

Set up by British ex-pat Tony Sales last year, the event saw over 200 people packed the poolside for the 2013 event held at Areca Lodge hotel.

Clad in matching bikini's, the teams took to the water to battle it out in a round robin format - supported form the sidelines by their bar's patrons.

Many teams had been holding practice sessions in the run up to the tournament in a bid to steal the crown from last year's winners.

The 2013 event was eventually won by the local Sensations bar which narrowly edged out TJ's from Naklua.

The event raised a total of 1million baht - £20,000 - for four local charities.

Founder Tony Sales told the Pattaya Mail: "I wanted to do something to give back to my adopted home town and country, as well as help change the community’s perception of ladyboys.

"I’ve lived here for some years now, and made friends with people from all walks of life – rich and poor, foreigner and Thai, and that includes many ladyboys.

"But one thing I’ve noticed is that transgendered women – kathoeys, or ladyboys as most people call them – often face prejudice brought on by stereotypes.

"So when I began thinking about what I could do to give back to Pattaya [read more]

Carabao are a Thai rock band which is very popular in Thailand and other Asian countries.

The group was formed in 1976 by university students Yuenyong Opakul (Aed) and Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon (Keo or Khiao) who met while studying at Mapúa Institute of Technology in the Philippines.

The word carabao is Tagalog meaning “buffalo”, a symbol of fighting, hard work, and patience.

                                  carabao

They are known for their Phleng phuea chiwit or ‘songs for life’. This kind of music came to prominence through the protest songs of the 1970s political upheaval in Thailand, especially from the band Caravan.

Carabao have blended the acoustic/folk style of ‘peua chiwit’ with other forms of Thai music, western rock and country music, and various kinds of world music like Latin music and reggae, earning such labels as ‘ethnic rockers’ and ‘Kings of 3Cha’ or ‘Rolling Stones of Asia’. MTV Asia calls them “veteran”.

Carabao’s songs often tackle social and political issues, demanding social justice and taking on the causes of the ordinary Thai people, but they have also created love songs and more philosophical songs that carry messages for people everywhere.

Aed Carabao is loved by many but his sharp tongue and open criticism of corrupt politicians, big business and environmental destruction perhaps make it surprising that he has lasted so long.

At least one or two songs on most albums up to the mid-’90s were banned by the government and coverage of the band rarely appeared on government TV and radio stations.

Despite this, Carabao is the most popular Thai rock group of all time. Carabao has reached cult status long ago and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world.
They are compared with U2.

riddick bowe 2 270x200 Riddick Bowe “Destroyed” in Debut Muay Thai Boxing Match held in Pattaya

Whether you were at Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya last night, saw the fight on TV or caught the article in Pattaya One, you will have witnessed the ex heavyweight champion - get in 5 minutes - the worst beating of his career in any ring!. This was the article in Pattaya One. Had to share this one...so enjoy and watch video at the end!

In what many are describing as an embarrassing lesson for former World Boxing Champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe, who chose Pattaya for his debut Muay Thai bout, the former “Great” lost by Knock-Out in the second round of his fight against 30 year old Russian Levgen Golovin.
The “Muay Thai Super Fight” event was held at the Bali Hai Port in South Pattaya on Friday Night and featured a number of international Muay Thai fights in an event held to boost the profile of the famous Thai Sport to the rest of the World.
The event was well attended, with many of the spectators coming to see Riddick Bowe, who beat Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.
For Friday’s fight Bowe weighed in at a heavy 300 pounds and throughout the short fight he was slow and showed none of his punching power he was so well known for. It was repeated kicks to the legs which brought Bowe down to the canvass in the 2nd round which saw him unable to beat the count and continue the fight.
Many are saying 45 year old Bowe, who was paid a reported 150,000 US Dollars to fight in Pattaya, should not continue his career in Muay Thai and retire gracefully, but he is determined to continue in the sport.

Ex Heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe to fight in Pattaya 14 June

Superfight event will be held at a specially constructed boxing arena at Bali Hai from 6 p.m.

Muay Thai Authority reported yesterday that the Muaythai Superfight event, which was set to feature Riddick Bowe’s Muay Thai debut, had been canceled. It now seems that the event is not canceled, but instead rescheduled to June 14th due to an ankle injury suffered by Riddick Bowe in training. There is no word if any of the original match ups will remain, but it seems Bowe will still headline the card.

Riddick Bowe, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, gets back in the ring on Tuesday in Bangkok as he prepares for his debut in the Thai martial arts discipline of Muay Thai. Bowe, 44, has been inactive as a boxer since 2008 but having announced his decision in March to take on a new challenge, the American is now training in Bangkok ahead of a 14 June showdown against the Russian Levgen Golovin.

SFX Cinema Pattaya Central...The Last Stand

The last blog post was about Central Festival in Pattaya.
It really only came to mind because i was there the other day with my wife. We hadn't seen a movie in a while and a friend of hers had recommended Arnold Schwarzenegger's new movie "The Last Stand". As i walked into Central Festival i realized how much i had missed the old days of seeing movies at Big C North Pattaya, or Royal Garden which does not even have a movie theatre anymore and just how much times and things have changed here.

SFX Cinema is definitely a 5 star theatre as i mentioned in yesterdays blog post. Movies, though, are still relatively cheap, especially compared to the west. 140 baht per ticket and another 280 baht for 2 boxes of  popcorn and 2 pepsi's is still very reasonable. Seating is very comfortable with seats that recline back almost as much as a business class seat on most airlines! The sound system is excellent, good enough for me to ignore the group behind me which felt the need to talk through most of the flick.

The movie itself was a pretty entertaining...not too realistic but then again it is an "Arnold flick"! "The Last Stand" combines a good amount of action and a lot of humor. Parts of it were so funny you didn't really care how unrealistic it actually was.

For those that haven't seen it yet, Arnold plays an old sheriff in a very small quiet town in Southern Arizona just a few miles away from the Mexican Border. Meanwhile back up in Las Vegas an extremely dangerous drug cartel boss has just been broken out of prison while being transferred to death row. The cartel boss has hired a rogue mercenary group to break him out of prison and get him across the border back into Mexico. This high speed chase goes through Arnolds town of Sommerville Arizona, leading to a bridge that this mercenary group has specially constructed for him to escape the U.S.

Overall the film offers plenty of bullets, explosions, high speed car chases, drama and some very funny moments. If you're bored one of these many rainy days we seem to be unseasonably experiencing here in Pattaya, this definitely would be a good way to kill a couple of hours. Check out the preview clip below.
