On this first day or April pattaya seems to have a sense of humor

Shocked Residents as Toll Booths Appear Overnight

PATTAYA: -- During the night City Hall have introduced a new tollbooth at the start of Beach Road, as you enter from Dolphin Round about.

Thai double pricing standards apply with Thai Nationals entering free with foreigners paying a minimum 30 baht. Pattaya City Hall have assured Inspire eMagazine that all Expats that produce a valid Thai licence will be entitled to the Thai pricing.

There will be no costs for pedestrians, and it is unclear whether motorcyclists using the walkways rather than the road will be tackled. Local expat, Steven Sparkle, was there at 2am to witness it. "There were hundreds of workers that literally turned up and it was all done within a matter of hours.

I can't believe it, no one was told about this. It's awful". pattaya-tolls Discount for Beer Bar Patrons If you buy two or more beers at any of the venues on Pattaya Beach Road do get your card stamped, as you will get a full refund on your toll charge when you get to the end of Beach Road from one of the Tollbooths on exit. Dave Trevors who was one of the first to use the toll at 9am this morning was livid.

"I had a meeting at 10am but had to stop and drink two beers along Beach Road so I could get my toll money back, I am not sure this is a good thing for Pattaya that drivers start drinking so early.

Needless to say I was late for my meeting". It is believed that the money back initiative for drinking a couple of beers, which was introduced as a strategy to help local bar business in Beach Road, may need to be rethought as City Hall has questions over the effect it may have on drink driving

Will not Impact Tourism Numbers Thailand Tourism Authority (TAT) are confident this will have no impact on tourist visitors to Pattaya and in fact believe the new revenue will ensure an even more pleasant Pattaya Beach Road as monies can be used to beautify the area.

They also plan to build 10 minute parking areas for drivers wanting to take advantage of the two beer offer that will ensure they get their toll money charges back; but it is thought this money could be raised by sponsorship for these parking zones by one of the beer companies.

Pattaya Red Shirts force cancellation of anti-government concert in South Pattaya

red-1.jpg

PATTAYA: -- The Pattaya Pro-Government Red Shirts were out in-force late on Monday Night in South Pattaya after they received word of a music concert at a South Pattaya Restaurant featuring a well-known anti-government singer.

The Singer is affectionately known as “Marijuana” and just 2 days before his appearance in Pattaya he was on-stage in Bangkok at an anti-government rally performing songs which accuse the Thai Prime Minister of being involved in corrupt activities.

Over 100 Red Shirts took part in a noisy protest outside of the Peace House Restaurant in Soi Khopai, owned by Khun Sitarmaert, who was forced to confront the Red Shirts and ultimately cancelled the concert, which was due to take place in less than 2 hours time.

The singer has performed at the restaurant many times but the owner confirmed that he will no longer perform at the restaurant as he fears for his own safety.

Thailand continues to experience coldest temperatures in 30 years

Cold spell will continue into next week,

weather bureau says

The Nation

30225129-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- TEMPERATURES in the Northeast will drop by another 3-5 degrees Celsius next week because of a new high-pressure front moving in from China, which will cover most of Thailand by Monday and Tuesday, the state weather-forecast agency reported yesterday. Many areas in the North and Northeast have already been covered by frost.

According to the Meteorological Department, the current high-pressure front covering the country is now weakening, causing temperatures to rise slightly by 2-4 degrees.

However, the cold snap is still affecting many areas, it said, and advised members of public to remain vigilant, as poor visibility due to thick fog could lead to an increase in traffic accidents.

Winds in the South are also weakening as a northeasterly monsoon front covering the Gulf of Thailand is now moving across the mainland, the department said.

People living in the North, especially in highland areas, were still experiencing early-morning frosts. as temperatures measured between 2 and 6 degrees. The current lowest temperatures measured between 9 and 11 degrees Celsius, while the highest temperatures recorded were 25 to 28 degrees Celsius.

In the Northeast, temperatures in highland areas were between 2 and 8 degrees, while lows in low-lying areas were 10-15 degrees and highs were 25-28 degrees.

In the Central region, fog and cold were reported in the morning, with the lows of 12-14 degrees and highs of 27-28 degrees.

In the South, the cold snap, mixed with showers, was reported to be worst in the morning. Strong coastal winds were also creating high waves, especially in Songkhla, where they were as high as 2 metres.

At Loei's Phu Kradueng National Park, where temperatures of minus-4 degrees were recorded, thousands of tourists flocked to set up camp and experience the park's overnight frost, which lay across the grass and the Sa Kaew Anodas swamp.

In Lampang, people kept themselves warm by gathering around bonfires as temperatures dropped to around 8 degrees.

Meanwhile, many rural people in Si Sa Ket were reported to be in need of warm clothing and blankets.

Governments new plan to reduce traffic on Pattaya Beach Road

Baht Bus Pattaya Beach Parking Zones opened by Provincial Governor

Traffic on Pattaya Beach to be reduced by limiting where "Baht Buses" can legally park.

As Pattaya continues to grow as a city so does the traffic problem. The recent widening of Pattaya's Beach Rd has been one step in attempting to reduce the problem. It has been long discussed that one of the major problems is just way too many baht buses " sorng taews" on the streets. They seem to stop and park where ever they want, well it looks like things are about to change on Beach Rd. check out this article from Pattaya One

On Wednesday the Governor of Chonburi Province, officially opened 17 dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones for Baht Buses along Pattaya Beach, which has been done to reduce traffic congestion along the Beach Road.

In a colorful and melodic ceremony, which included a Marching Band, long speeches and the ceremonial cutting of a ribbon, 17 new parking areas for Baht Buses were opened, which culminated in a demonstration of how a Baht Bus is expected to conduct itself in the future.

For many years the Baht Buses, which currently number 712, have been able to park where they want, regardless of any parking restrictions. Police have been seen to issue parking tickets to the Baht Bus Drivers but overall the influential Baht Bus Cooperative members have been able to stop where they want.

The Governor claims this is about to change and any Baht Bus who stops outside of a parking area will be fined and clamped which the Governor hopes will alleviate the traffic jams at peak times on Pattaya Beach Road.

Many are skeptical and believe the zones will largely be ignored by the drivers who are unlikely to ignore tourists who flag them down, especially those who need transportation off of the main routes which normally commands a higher fee than the standard 10 or 20 Baht you would pay if the Baht Bus is running along a designated route.

New Year road death toll reaches 209
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Dec 31 -- A total of 1,818 road accidents have claimed 209 lives and resulted in 1,931 injuries over the first four of the seven dangerous days of the New Year holiday, according to Thailand's Road Safety Centre.

Chanvech Boonpraderm, advisor to the Office of the Vocational Education Commission, told a press briefing that on Monday alone, 48 people were killed, six less than the previous year; and 541 others were injured in 496 road accidents, explaining that most accidents resulted from drunk driving, followed by excessive speeding.

After being accident-free initially, the first accidents in four days occurred in Chaiyaphum and Samut Songkhram so now all provinces have had accidents.

Meanwhile, Nakhon Sawan recorded the highest number of accidents at 66 while Nakhon Ratchasima recorded the largest number of injuries at 81.

Nakhon Ratchasima has also seen the highest number of fatalities at 13. (MCOT online news)

Holiday season finds roads in Thailand deadly!

Thailand's roads once again deadly during the Holiday Season!

My friends, fellow ex-pats and tourists, please be careful this holiday season. The roads here in Thailand like anywhere else can be very dangerous especially during the holiday season. Please don't drink and drive. Check out the early statistics from "The Nation"

Rescue workers tend to people injured in a car accident in Phitsanulok yesterday. Six people were injured in the crash after a speeding pickup crossed a traffic island and hit this sedan head-on.

BANGKOK: -- Police say 474 road accidents killed 86 people and injured 885 between Friday and Saturday, the first two days of the so-called "seven dangerous days".

The road toll is expected to rise further over the coming days.

Yesterday, the Road Safety Centre released statistics from road accidents reported on Friday and Saturday only.

Drunk driving and speeding were the major causes of accidents during the opening days of the festive period, according to Department of Probation director-general Ruenvadee Suwanmong-kol, who chaired yesterday's press conference.

Reports say 37 per cent of road accidents resulted from drunk driving and 23 per cent from high-speed driving; while 81.5 per cent of road accidents involved motorcycles. Most of the motorcycle casualties were not wearing a helmet.

Main roads were the site of 61 per cent of the accidents and 34.6 per cent occurred on village roads. Highways saw 34.3 per cent of all accidents, most of which took place between 4pm and 8pm.

Some 611,600 cars and vehicles were inspected at police checkpoints and 100,587 cases resulted in arrests. Infractions included 31,020 drivers without a licence, and 28,092 motorcyclists without a helmet.

Nakhon Si Thammarat had the highest number of road accidents and number of injured people, with 23 and 25 respectively.

Ayutthaya had the highest number of deaths from road accidents, with five cases. Only four provinces recorded no road accidents during this period: Chaiyaphum, Bueng Kan, Rayong and Samut Songkhram.

Ruenvadee said the centre had ordered provincial authorities nationwide to help eliminate road accidents on main and secondary roads in the cities, especially near entertainment venues.

Police are urged to arrest those who drink and drive, drive at high speed, or ride motorcycles without a helmet.

The New Year holidays are associated with danger as millions of people hit the road on vacation or visits to home provinces.

Chutipong Sukarayotin, a player of the Thai national beach volleyball team, was driving to his home province of Udon Thani when he suddenly fell asleep behind the wheel in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday morning.

His car slammed into a telephone booth.

"The crash woke me up," the 21-year-old man said.

He said he left Bangkok at about 5pm on Saturday but with the traffic jammed, the trip took so long he became tired and fell asleep.

"Fortunately, I had my safety belt on and my car had an air bag. So, I've survived," Chutipong said. "But I've learnt a lesson now.

"I’ll never drive the whole night again."

Police have charged Chutipong with reckless driving and causing damage to the property of others.

Thailand sees drop in tourism as a result of Political Unrest

The expected high season for tourism in Thailand has seen numbers drop as much as 20% due to the countries current political situation

 http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/www.thaivisa.com/englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/wp-content/uploads/types_image_cache/xIMGP9667-728x413.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Dk68teZXPQ.jpg

Tourists drop over 20% now

The president of the Association of Domestic Travel says tourists have now dropped by over 20% as the result of the ongoing political unrest in the country.

Association president Yoothachai Sunthornratanavej said that the current political turmoil from street demonstrations and news photos showing the use of tear gas on demonstrators had scared away tourists.

He said that earlier tourists have just put off their travels, and adopting a wait-and-see of the development of the protest situation in Thailand.

But now as protests dragged on and violence broke out, they had cancelled the trips to Thailand.

He said more than 20% of tourists  have dropped or up to 400,000  have cancelled travels to Thailand.

Meanwhile domestic travelers also have no mood for travels and some of them instead participated in the demonstrations.

He said the drop of tourist travels this year was much higher than when the Suvarnabhumit airport was forced to close three days by protesters in 2008. He said the tourism industry recovered fast from the airport closure, but for this year’s prolonged protest, he said he did not know how long it could recover.

Each country is expected to be given 45 minutes to display its best, making for over 2 hours of entertainment both Friday 29, and Saturday 30 of November

Traffic will be heavy and parking will be limited, so plan ahead, put on some comfortable walking shoes, and experience this very festive event!

Thailand getting serious abour drunk driving!

New Thailand laws crack down on

drunk drivers.

Thailand is seen as a very relaxed tourist destination, which it is. However it's showing almost zero tolerance against drinking and driving.

Many foreign tourists come to Thailand and think it is a great party atmosphere. Cheap drugs easily accessible, and in places like Pattaya it's the wild west. Just do what you like and there's no repercussions. Many times it has been witnessed foreigners drinking and riding motorbikes, drunks on the backs of motorbike taxies with big bottles of local brew in hand. Well that is all changing, just to what extent? Check out this article i saw today on Thai Visa.

Don't drink and drive -- New strict rulings!

bo.jpg

HUA HIN: -- The Office of Alcoholic Beverages has announced that the occupants of vehicles of any kind who drink alcohol during travel are subject to six months imprisonment and/or a 60,000 THB fine.

The penalties will also be imposed on drinkers in vehicles parked on sidewalks or shoulders of public roads, including sois, regardless of whether the vehicles are moving, OAB director Samarn Footrakool said.

Passengers of railbased transport who drink are not subject to the penalties. Drinking occupants and drivers will be equally liable for such violations. "The only exceptions under this law are occupants of vehicles parked in front of their homes," he said.

Some Other Alcohol Rules In Thailand
Since January 1st 2006 Thailand has enforced a law that only allows shops to sell alcohol between 11.00 am.- 2.00 pm. and 5.00 pm.- 2.00 am.

Staff at some stores have difficulty in explaining to foreigners why they cannot be sold alcohol between 2 and 5 PM. Angry outbursts by customers who think they are being singled out are not uncommon. However remember it’s not up to them; it’s the law!

The Election Commission of Thailand bans the sale of alcohol at any retail outlet, and the serving of alcohol in all bars and restaurants during elections. This ban only applies to so-called Type 3 and Type 4 sellers, those who are licensed to sell liquor and spirits in quantities below 10 litres per occasion. Retail shops such as 7-Elevens and Big C supermarkets are put in the same position as wholesalers (being Type 1 and Type 2 sellers) and can only sell in quantities above 10 litres.

The reason given in the text of the relevant Ministerial Regulation is to enhance ''the government's policies towards controlling the consumption of liquor and tobacco for the benefit of society, in the case of liquor by decreasing the times for retail liquor sales''. Yet the choice of the hours of 2pm to 5pm must have had a more specific purpose than that. One popular school of thought is that it is designed to help prevent underage drinking. Classes typically finish for the day by 2pm, and the theory is that wayward students might then run to the nearest 7-Eleven and start drinking. Yet the ban is in place seven days a week.

Another reason for the ban may simply be that the government is trying to curb all-day ''benders'', or afternoon drinking by people who might be inclined to play hookie from work after lunch with their colleagues.

Legal Drinking Age and Alcohol-Free Zones
Thailand introduced the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act in 2008 , which amended some of Thailand’s previous alcohol laws and increased the drinking age from eighteen to twenty. The Act has specific language making it illegal to sell alcohol to anyone under twenty years old. The Act also set forth laws and penalties for designated areas where alcohol cannot legally be consumed. For example, drinking alcohol is illegal in the following locations: temples or places of worship; infirmaries and pharmacies; public offices; education institutions; petrol stations or petrol station shops and public parks. There are exceptions to many of these locations. For example, if you are attending an authorized banquet at an education institution or public office, or if you are within a temple at which consuming alcohol is part of the worship, then you may legally drink an alcoholic beverage. The penalty for drinking alcohol and one of the aforementioned locations without proper authorization is up to 6 months imprisonment and/or no more than a fine of ten thousand baht.

Selling alcohol to anyone who has previously lost consciousness from drinking is also against the law in Thailand. Additionally, if you are considered intoxicated and provoke an altercation with a law enforcement official, the penalty can be up to one year imprisonment and/or a fine up to twenty thousand THB.

PATTAYA: -- A ladyboy water volleyball tournament has caused a splash in Thailand - with teams from across the country competing for the crown.

Eight sides - all made up of workers from the country's bars - descended on the coastal resort of Pattaya for the second annual event aimed at raising money for charity.

Set up by British ex-pat Tony Sales last year, the event saw over 200 people packed the poolside for the 2013 event held at Areca Lodge hotel.

Clad in matching bikini's, the teams took to the water to battle it out in a round robin format - supported form the sidelines by their bar's patrons.

Many teams had been holding practice sessions in the run up to the tournament in a bid to steal the crown from last year's winners.

The 2013 event was eventually won by the local Sensations bar which narrowly edged out TJ's from Naklua.

The event raised a total of 1million baht - £20,000 - for four local charities.

Founder Tony Sales told the Pattaya Mail: "I wanted to do something to give back to my adopted home town and country, as well as help change the community’s perception of ladyboys.

"I’ve lived here for some years now, and made friends with people from all walks of life – rich and poor, foreigner and Thai, and that includes many ladyboys.

"But one thing I’ve noticed is that transgendered women – kathoeys, or ladyboys as most people call them – often face prejudice brought on by stereotypes.

"So when I began thinking about what I could do to give back to Pattaya [read more]

Pattaya Boat Show to begin 22 November

Pattaya Boat Show set to kick off at Ocean Marina for three days starting 22 November

People may not associate Pattaya with sailing, regattas, or deep sea fishing but there is a huge here market for all.

Ocean Marina will be holding its 2nd annual boat show with the hopes of delivering high end tourists to Thailand's number one beach resort destination, Pattaya. Here is an article i found in Thai Visa that explains what the boat show will offer

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show shines global spotlight on Pattaya's marine tourism treasures

PATTAYA: -- The annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is set to take place at Ocean Marina Yacht Club 22–24 November 2013 for the second year, with the aim to promote marine leisure tourism and deliver high end tourists to Thailand's number one beach resort destination, Pattaya.

At the recent press conference in Pattaya, guest of honor Mr. Ronnakij Akasingh, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya City, together with Mrs. Pataraporn Sithivanich, Executive Director, Product Promotion Department, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and Ocean Property executives announced the highlights for the Show's second year.

Pattaya is widely regarded as one of Asia's favourite seaside resorts, increasingly being referred to as the "Thai Riviera". Catering to tourists from all cultures and walks of life, Pattaya provides a safe, relaxing, fun–filled stay with tropical beaches, world-class hotels, a wide variety of local and international restaurants, as well as shopping centres and markets featuring local OTOP handicrafts to global luxury labels. International standard golf courses, top medical facilities and an established marine infrastructure make Pattaya a leading holiday destination of choice for both Thai and International visitors.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), almost nine million tourists visit Pattaya each year, a mix of domestic and international, who enjoy the coastal resort and the marine leisure tourism offerings that has made Pattaya a household name around the world.

In line with the TAT’s strategy to grow high end tourism in Pattaya, and working closely with the marine tourism sector on Thailand's east coast, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show aim to showcase the region as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.

Mrs. Supatra Angkawinijwong, Deputy Managing Director, Ocean Property commented, “Pattaya is famous for its beaches, islands and marine tourism, and through the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show we aim to promote the region and showcase the marine leisure tourism industry to a global audience. Following a successful first year, we expect to see the event grow even bigger this year.”

“The number of boats in the area continues to grow and while Ocean Marina Yacht Club is already the largest marina in South East Asia, we have plans to expand further. This, together with a growing marine infrastructure around Pattaya, positions the region as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.”

Marine tourism is a large revenue generator for Pattaya, attracting high end international tourists who come to enjoy the stunning marine landscape, chartering yachts and using the marine services and marina facilities provided by Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

The Gulf of Thailand opens up to the South China Sea giving easy access to yachts from Hong Kong and further north, and south to the Indonesian archipelago, Australia and New Zealand. Strategically positioned and with the untouched waters of Cambodia and Vietnam on its doorstep, in addition to the myriad of islands dotted off the coast, gives credence to Pattaya's claim as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.

Pattaya, in addition to having a strong international tourism appeal, is also popular with domestic tourists visiting from Bangkok and surrounds. And this market continues to grow with a trend toward more Thai nationals investing in the marine leisure tourism lifestyle.

“Yacht owners at Ocean Marina Yacht Club have always been majority foreigners, approximately 80%. However, recently we have seen this demographic change as more and more Thais buy into the marine leisure lifestyle. We have seen the number of Thai yacht owners in the marina increase from 20% to 38% within the last 12 months.”

An expanded in-water space at the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will host a large display of luxury motor and sailing yachts, including models from Princess and Simpson Marine, as well as gadgets and water toys for those who already have everything.

Onshore will be a diverse display from the marine tourism and leisure and lifestyle business sectors, from Thailand and overseas, including top yachting brands as well as luxury real estate, Super Bikes, Super Cars, marine accessories and much more. In total, there will be over 100 exhibitors and 2,600 sq.m. of exhibition area.

For visitors, of which approximately 3,000 are expected, there is a packed program of onshore and on-water activities and entertainment planned, including free sailing trials, free kayak trials, lucky draws, cocktail parties, Dragon Boat Races and a marina-side beer garden and festival with live band.

The 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will take place 22-24 November at Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

Thailand hit with heavy rains from Tropical Storm Nari

Thailands Moonsoon Season full speed ahead!

Heavy rains started pounding Thailand around 9PM local time last night and continued into the morning as Tropical Storm Nari made landfall in Vietnam

        Pattaya's New Improved Beach Rd

MCOT online news reports up to 80-90 mm of rain in some areas, here is the article.

Floodypedia
BANGKOK, Oct 16 - Bangkok was hit by a drenching downpour early this morning with rain averaging 80-90 millimetres, and Min Buri as well as Khlong Sam Wa were also heavily hit with 90 millimetres of rain, all part of the last performance of Typhoon Nari which brought disruption and destruction across east Asia.

Some areas of the Thai capital were flooded this morning due to the slow drainage of rainwater. The authorities have sped up drainage works to lower the water level in Khlong San Saeb to create spare capacity for draining water.

Now only a low pressure cell bringing abundant rain to a broad landscape that needs no more, the remains of Typhoon Nari has lost its storm power but now stretches across Thailand's northeast and east still more rain.

Today and tomorrow more rain and isolated heavy rain is expected along with winds over the Northeast and the East, not only at Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani as earlier reported by the weather agency, but moving west and south to Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, and Si Sa Ket.

From today through Saturday, another rather strong high pressure weather system from China will extend over upper Thailand leading to cool weather with a 5-8 degree Celsius temperature drop and in the North and the upper Northeast.

Typhoon Nari made its landfall at Da Nang, Vietnam and as it moved across Vietnam, the Lao PDR and into Thailand, it was downgraded to tropical storm, tropical depression and low pressure cell status. (MCOT online news)
