BANGKOK: -- The beach at Pattaya in Chon Buri province is to be widened to about 35 metres to prevent erosion and boost income from tourists visiting the seaside resort town.

Pattaya City's sand-fill project is expected to begin in October and will take around two years, said mayor Itthiphol Kunplome.

To extend the three-km beachfront to the eventual 35-metre width, will take 36,000 cubic metres of sand at a cost of Bt430 million. The first 15 metres of the new beach would involve a sandbag wall to serve as an embankment, while the remaining 20 metres would be of sand. The new beachfront will stretch for 2.7-km and cover around 60 rai, stretching from North, Central to South Pattaya beaches, Itthiphol said.

Itthiphol, who has been the mayor for six years, initiated this beach-extension project in 2010, requesting help from government agencies and local business owners.

Apart from the Marine Department, Pattaya City has hired the Aquatic Resources Research Institute, under Chulalongkorn University, as a project adviser.

The chief of the area Marine Department office, Rewat Phoriang, said the project had passed the Environment Impact Assessment, and is undergoing a bidding process, with this year's budget already available after approval from the Marine Department.

The sand to be used would be closest to the kind on Pattaya beach, found at beaches in Chon Buri and neighbouring Rayong, Itthiphol said.

The first beach areas to undergo the project would be those most damaged or affected from erosion.

When completed, the beach extension project is expected to revamp the image of Pattaya as a resort town with clean beaches and white sand, making it more attractive and have the potential of attracting 10 million tourists, as projected in the Asean Economic Community in 2015, Itthiphol said.

The head of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, Sinchai Wattanasartsathorn, said the extended beach would be beneficial to the local tourism industry, especially for Westerners who liked sunbathing. Vendors who will rent out beach seats and sell food at the beach also praised the project.

Pattaya ferry sinks of coast of Koh Larn---latest update

Pattaya Ferry capsizes off of Koh Larn yesterday!

ferry 1 230x200 UPDATED: 6 dead, over 100 injured in Pattaya Larn Island Ferry Disaster

It seems like almost every other month you hear about a ferry sinking and it always has the one common denominator...overcrowding! Most commonly happening in Southern Phillipines and Indonesia Thailand ferry operators have gotten away with it for years...until now. Here is the latest from Pattaya One News

UPDATED: 6 dead, over 100 injured in Pattaya Larn Island Ferry Disaster
Posted on November 3, 2013 at 10:52 pm

Current reports suggest 6 people have been killed and up to 200 people have been injured in, what is being described as, Pattaya’s worst marine accident in living history.

Just after 4pm on Sunday reports began to come in of a Passenger Ferry which had sunk off the coast of Larn Island. It was quickly confirmed that the boat was carrying far more people than it is licensed to.

As of time of publication the names or nationalities of those who have died have not been officially confirmed and the figure is set to rise, as up to 20 of the injured are currently in critical condition in Hospital. One Police source suggested 3 Thai Nationals, 2 Russians and 1 Chinese Tourists were those that died and others are feared missing presumed drowned.

The boat which sunk was named as the “Koh Larn Travel 1” Ferry which is a 2-storey ferry with a licensed capacity of 150 passengers. It has now been confirmed that 209 passengers were on-board when it sunk approximately 500 meters off the coast of Nuan Beach on Larn island, approximately 7kms off the coast of Pattaya. Unconfirmed reports suggest a water pump was not working on the vessel which caused it to sink in under 1 minute after passengers quickly moved to the upper-deck making the boat highly unstable.

Emergency vessels and private vessels were quickly on-scene to help those in the water. Some were administered CPR at the scene which continued at the Bali Hai Port. The list of those who lost their lives is expected to be released within the next 24 hours.

Later on Sunday Royal Thai navy Divers were brought in from their base in Sattahip District to begin the task of searching for those missing presumed drowned which is thought to number more than 15.

The Captain of the vessel was named as Khun Saman aged 42 who is believed to have somehow escaped before rescue boats arrived and is now wanted by Police. An arrest warrant for him is expected to be issued on Monday. He is thought to have first collected passengers from Tawean Beach on the Island and then moved round to Nuan Beach. This is thought to have been the last ferry leaving the Island on Sunday which is why so many people were on-board. It was also reported that the ferry had returned from the boatyard 2 weeks ago after undergoing extensive repairs and renovations.

How the Pattaya authorities who are responsible for Marine safety respond to this tragedy is still unclear but recent promises to enforce regulations at sea to prevent major disasters such as this one appear to have been broken.

No emergency numbers or points of contact for those needing information about friends or family members have been published. Pattaya One will update this story as new information is received.

PATTAYA: -- A ladyboy water volleyball tournament has caused a splash in Thailand - with teams from across the country competing for the crown.

Eight sides - all made up of workers from the country's bars - descended on the coastal resort of Pattaya for the second annual event aimed at raising money for charity.

Set up by British ex-pat Tony Sales last year, the event saw over 200 people packed the poolside for the 2013 event held at Areca Lodge hotel.

Clad in matching bikini's, the teams took to the water to battle it out in a round robin format - supported form the sidelines by their bar's patrons.

Many teams had been holding practice sessions in the run up to the tournament in a bid to steal the crown from last year's winners.

The 2013 event was eventually won by the local Sensations bar which narrowly edged out TJ's from Naklua.

The event raised a total of 1million baht - £20,000 - for four local charities.

Founder Tony Sales told the Pattaya Mail: "I wanted to do something to give back to my adopted home town and country, as well as help change the community’s perception of ladyboys.

"I’ve lived here for some years now, and made friends with people from all walks of life – rich and poor, foreigner and Thai, and that includes many ladyboys.

"But one thing I’ve noticed is that transgendered women – kathoeys, or ladyboys as most people call them – often face prejudice brought on by stereotypes.

"So when I began thinking about what I could do to give back to Pattaya [read more]

Pattaya Boat Show to begin 22 November

Pattaya Boat Show set to kick off at Ocean Marina for three days starting 22 November

People may not associate Pattaya with sailing, regattas, or deep sea fishing but there is a huge here market for all.

Ocean Marina will be holding its 2nd annual boat show with the hopes of delivering high end tourists to Thailand's number one beach resort destination, Pattaya. Here is an article i found in Thai Visa that explains what the boat show will offer

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show shines global spotlight on Pattaya's marine tourism treasures

PATTAYA: -- The annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is set to take place at Ocean Marina Yacht Club 22–24 November 2013 for the second year, with the aim to promote marine leisure tourism and deliver high end tourists to Thailand's number one beach resort destination, Pattaya.

At the recent press conference in Pattaya, guest of honor Mr. Ronnakij Akasingh, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya City, together with Mrs. Pataraporn Sithivanich, Executive Director, Product Promotion Department, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and Ocean Property executives announced the highlights for the Show's second year.

Pattaya is widely regarded as one of Asia's favourite seaside resorts, increasingly being referred to as the "Thai Riviera". Catering to tourists from all cultures and walks of life, Pattaya provides a safe, relaxing, fun–filled stay with tropical beaches, world-class hotels, a wide variety of local and international restaurants, as well as shopping centres and markets featuring local OTOP handicrafts to global luxury labels. International standard golf courses, top medical facilities and an established marine infrastructure make Pattaya a leading holiday destination of choice for both Thai and International visitors.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), almost nine million tourists visit Pattaya each year, a mix of domestic and international, who enjoy the coastal resort and the marine leisure tourism offerings that has made Pattaya a household name around the world.

In line with the TAT’s strategy to grow high end tourism in Pattaya, and working closely with the marine tourism sector on Thailand's east coast, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show aim to showcase the region as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.

Mrs. Supatra Angkawinijwong, Deputy Managing Director, Ocean Property commented, “Pattaya is famous for its beaches, islands and marine tourism, and through the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show we aim to promote the region and showcase the marine leisure tourism industry to a global audience. Following a successful first year, we expect to see the event grow even bigger this year.”

“The number of boats in the area continues to grow and while Ocean Marina Yacht Club is already the largest marina in South East Asia, we have plans to expand further. This, together with a growing marine infrastructure around Pattaya, positions the region as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.”

Marine tourism is a large revenue generator for Pattaya, attracting high end international tourists who come to enjoy the stunning marine landscape, chartering yachts and using the marine services and marina facilities provided by Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

The Gulf of Thailand opens up to the South China Sea giving easy access to yachts from Hong Kong and further north, and south to the Indonesian archipelago, Australia and New Zealand. Strategically positioned and with the untouched waters of Cambodia and Vietnam on its doorstep, in addition to the myriad of islands dotted off the coast, gives credence to Pattaya's claim as a leading marine tourism hub in South East Asia.

Pattaya, in addition to having a strong international tourism appeal, is also popular with domestic tourists visiting from Bangkok and surrounds. And this market continues to grow with a trend toward more Thai nationals investing in the marine leisure tourism lifestyle.

“Yacht owners at Ocean Marina Yacht Club have always been majority foreigners, approximately 80%. However, recently we have seen this demographic change as more and more Thais buy into the marine leisure lifestyle. We have seen the number of Thai yacht owners in the marina increase from 20% to 38% within the last 12 months.”

An expanded in-water space at the 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will host a large display of luxury motor and sailing yachts, including models from Princess and Simpson Marine, as well as gadgets and water toys for those who already have everything.

Onshore will be a diverse display from the marine tourism and leisure and lifestyle business sectors, from Thailand and overseas, including top yachting brands as well as luxury real estate, Super Bikes, Super Cars, marine accessories and much more. In total, there will be over 100 exhibitors and 2,600 sq.m. of exhibition area.

For visitors, of which approximately 3,000 are expected, there is a packed program of onshore and on-water activities and entertainment planned, including free sailing trials, free kayak trials, lucky draws, cocktail parties, Dragon Boat Races and a marina-side beer garden and festival with live band.

The 2013 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will take place 22-24 November at Ocean Marina Yacht Club.

Seawater off Samet has recovered sufficiently: govt

BANGKOK: -- KOH SAMET'S Ao Phrao, hit by an oil spill several months ago, will officially reopen to tourists this Friday.

Seawater-quality tests have confirmed that the bay is now ready for visitors to enjoy safely. Petroleum hydrocarbon, for example, has dropped to less than 1 microgram per litre of seawater, and mercury has plunged below 0.1mcg/l.

"The seawater started to return to normal at the end of September," Udom Kraiwatnussorn said yesterday in his capacity as secretary to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri.

An estimated 50,000 litres of crude oil leaked from an offshore pipe owned by PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) on July 27 off the coast of Rayong province. Because the oil spill hit Ao Phrao hard, it has been closed to the public since July 29. Ao Phrao is a part of Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park.

During the past few months, extensive clean-up operations have taken place and the oil spill's environmental impacts have been closely monitored.

Chote Trachu, permanent secretary of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, yesterday announced that the ecological system around Ao Phrao was clearly recovering.

"We have found more ghost crabs and other animals on the beach now," he said, adding that affected coral reefs also showed signs of improving.

Chote said his ministry thus resolved that Ao Phrao should reopen to tourists from November 1 onwards.

However, he said monitoring of the oil spill's impacts on marine and coastal ecology would continue for at least one more year. An environmental-rehabilitation plan has also been prepared for PTTGC to follow.

"The plan, for example, covers projects to expand corals, to plant artificial reefs, and to improve Samet Island's wastewater-management system," he said.

Pinsak Suraswadi, a senior official at the Marine and Coastal Resources Department, said the plan would require a budget of Bt166 million. "We will charge PTTGC for that," he said.

A PTTGC executive yesterday disclosed that it had already paid more than Bt800 million in expenses and compensation related to the oil spill.

To date, PTTGC has paid more than 5,000 small-scale fishermen in Rayong after they reported that the spill had badly affected their livelihoods.

Oil Spill in Koh Samet Thailand

I found this article in The Nation today. It relates to Pattaya as Koh Samet is a popular destination for tourists and ex-pats. Very easily accessible from Pattaya. Really a shame what happened. Here's the article:

About 20% have died in tainted areas: survey

BANGKOK: -- The state marine-watch agency has found that some coral reefs in the oil-slick-affected Ao Phrao area of Koh Samet have been killed off by bleaching, and some marine life had been reduced by up to 20 per cent.

The team's report was released by the Marine and Coastal Resources Depart-ment director-general Noppon Srisuk

When the oil slick hit Ao Phrao beach on the western side of the island, the agency sent a team to survey the coral reefs in 11 spots surrounding Koh Samet in Rayong province.

The team dived into the sea to depths of up to four metres to study damage at Noi Na, Laem Ya, Ao Lung Dam, Ao Kew Nha Nok, Ao Phai, Ao Look Yon, Koh Kudee, Koh Kham - Kruai, Koh Pla Teen, and the northern area of Ao Phrao.

Preliminary results showed that most of the intertidal zone had been tainted by the oil slick. The survey also revealed that about 10 to 20 per cent of marine life in Ao Phrao, especially stone crabs, snails, and oysters, had died.

The survey team collected samples of coral tissue to find the cause of death and estimate the percentage and scale of coral bleaching. The department was joined by marine experts from various educational institutes to conduct the survey and study the short, middle and long-term impact of the oil spill on the coral reefs. This team will take a year to survey the coral reef surrounding the affected island.

However, Noppon insisted no orders had been issued to close Ao Phrao for tourism activities.

Meanwhile, marine biologist Thon Thamrongnawasawat of Kasetsart University's Faculty of Fisheries, said he had also sent a team to survey changes to the coral reef in Ao Phrao last week.

The preliminary result of a parallel survey found that about 20 massive corals, located two metres undersea in the southern area of Ao Phrao, were bleached. Thon assumed this bleaching was caused by the oil slick.

However, he said his team needed to collect samples of coral tissue for in-depth analysis to confirm the real cause.

"At least we know where it should be closely monitored to determine further impacts of oil spills on coral reefs in this area," he said.

Sumet Saithong, chief of the Khao Laem Ya-Mu Koh Samet National Park, said he could not say right now whether coral reefs surrounding the island and affected area were dead. During the past few years, coral reefs surrounding the island had been bleached already before the oil slick affected the island.

Carabao are a Thai rock band which is very popular in Thailand and other Asian countries.

The group was formed in 1976 by university students Yuenyong Opakul (Aed) and Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon (Keo or Khiao) who met while studying at Mapúa Institute of Technology in the Philippines.

The word carabao is Tagalog meaning “buffalo”, a symbol of fighting, hard work, and patience.

                                  carabao

They are known for their Phleng phuea chiwit or ‘songs for life’. This kind of music came to prominence through the protest songs of the 1970s political upheaval in Thailand, especially from the band Caravan.

Carabao have blended the acoustic/folk style of ‘peua chiwit’ with other forms of Thai music, western rock and country music, and various kinds of world music like Latin music and reggae, earning such labels as ‘ethnic rockers’ and ‘Kings of 3Cha’ or ‘Rolling Stones of Asia’. MTV Asia calls them “veteran”.

Carabao’s songs often tackle social and political issues, demanding social justice and taking on the causes of the ordinary Thai people, but they have also created love songs and more philosophical songs that carry messages for people everywhere.

Aed Carabao is loved by many but his sharp tongue and open criticism of corrupt politicians, big business and environmental destruction perhaps make it surprising that he has lasted so long.

At least one or two songs on most albums up to the mid-’90s were banned by the government and coverage of the band rarely appeared on government TV and radio stations.

Despite this, Carabao is the most popular Thai rock group of all time. Carabao has reached cult status long ago and is now one of the most successful legendary rock groups in the world.
They are compared with U2.

Riddick Bowe “Destroyed” in Debut Muay Thai Boxing Match held in South Pattaya

riddick bowe 2 270x200 Riddick Bowe “Destroyed” in Debut Muay Thai Boxing Match held in Pattaya

Whether you were at Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya last night, saw the fight on TV or caught the article in Pattaya One, you will have witnessed the ex heavyweight champion - get in 5 minutes - the worst beating of his career in any ring!. This was the article in Pattaya One. Had to share this one...so enjoy and watch video at the end!

In what many are describing as an embarrassing lesson for former World Boxing Champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe, who chose Pattaya for his debut Muay Thai bout, the former “Great” lost by Knock-Out in the second round of his fight against 30 year old Russian Levgen Golovin.
The “Muay Thai Super Fight” event was held at the Bali Hai Port in South Pattaya on Friday Night and featured a number of international Muay Thai fights in an event held to boost the profile of the famous Thai Sport to the rest of the World.
The event was well attended, with many of the spectators coming to see Riddick Bowe, who beat Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion.
For Friday’s fight Bowe weighed in at a heavy 300 pounds and throughout the short fight he was slow and showed none of his punching power he was so well known for. It was repeated kicks to the legs which brought Bowe down to the canvass in the 2nd round which saw him unable to beat the count and continue the fight.
Many are saying 45 year old Bowe, who was paid a reported 150,000 US Dollars to fight in Pattaya, should not continue his career in Muay Thai and retire gracefully, but he is determined to continue in the sport.
